Many of his studies explicitly embrace an interdisciplinary methodology and apply, in particular, insights gained from contemporary work on images and metaphor, narratology, and ethical theory. This volume, edited by Dieter T. Roth, presents twenty-nine essays - several of which appear here in print or in English for the first time - under five headings: Imagery, Parables, Characters, Christology, and Ethics. These essays address a broad spectrum of questions and issues in the Fourth Gospel, and they are brought together in the present format in the hopes of contributing to and further stimulating truly groundbreaking work in the Gospel of John.

Titre : Character Studies in the Fourth Gospel : Narrative Approaches to Seventy Figures in John Type de document : LIVRE Auteurs : HUNT, Steven A., Éditeur scientifique ; TOLMIE, D. Francois, Éditeur scientifique ; ZIMMERMANN, Ruben, Éditeur scientifique Editeur : Tübingen : Mohr Siebeck Année de publication : 2013 Collection : Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zum Neuen Testament num. 314 Importance : 724 p ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-16-152784-5 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : This volume represents the most thorough study of characters and characterization in the Fourth Gospel heretofore published. Building on several different narrative approaches, the contributors assembled here offer sixty-two essays related to characters and group characters in John. Among these are detailed studies presenting fresh perspectives on characters who play a major role in the Gospel (e.g., Peter, Mary Magdalene, etc.), as well as original studies of characters who have never been the focus of narrative analysis before, characters often glossed over in commentaries as insignificant (e.g., the boy with the loaves and fish, the parents of the man born blind, etc.). Clearly, characters in John stand in the shadow of the protagonist -- Jesus. In this volume, however, they step fully into the light. Thus illuminated, it becomes clear how complex and nuanced many of them are. Titre : Imagery in the Gospel of John : Terms, Forms, Themes, and Theology of Johannine Figurative Language Type de document : LIVRE Auteurs : FREY, Jörg, Éditeur scientifique ; VAN DER WATT, Jan G., Éditeur scientifique ; ZIMMERMANN, Ruben, Éditeur scientifique Editeur : Tübingen : Mohr Siebeck Année de publication : 2006 Collection : Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zum Neuen Testament num. 200 Importance : 495 p ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-16-149116-0 Résumé : The Gospel of John is well-known for its wealth and depth of figurative language, metaphors and symbols. These articles, written by some of the leading scholars in Johannine exegesis and particularly in the debate on Johannine imagery, utilize a broad variety of methods of interpretation. The authors provide an in-depth discussion of the variety of terms and forms of figurative speech and explore the conceptual and traditio-historical background of central motifs. Some of the most prominent Johannine images (lamb, king, bread, shepherd, vine, eating and drinking and others) are discussed with regard to their literary design and theological meaning. The collection aims at opening up paths in the tangled thicket of John's figurative world, it amply demonstrates the close relationship between the different metaphors and images in the Fourth Gospel and opens the view to the inter-relatedness of its theological themes.
